At Polaris Travel Clinic and Pharmacy in Airdrie, our travel health practitioners can provide you with a plan to keep you safe and healthy on your trip that meets your needs. We offer two types of appointments for travellers: a comprehensive assessment and a basic appointment.
1) Comprehensive assessment
A comprehensive assessment is ideal for travellers who would like a personalized travel health plan created for them by practitioners with specialized training and certifications. This type of appointment can take 30+ minutes followed by any vaccinations and medications afterwards.
You should consider booking a comprehensive assessment if you:
- Need our travel health providers to determine which vaccines and medications are most appropriate for your trip
- Have complex, extended or uncertain itineraries
- Have complex medical histories, including chronic medical conditions, multiple prescription medications, and immune system issues that may greatly affect the type of vaccines recommended
- Are doing higher risk activities, such as going to high altitude, going to more remote locations, are involved in working with local populations that are at a greater risk of being sick
- Are travelling for business or work rotations in higher risk destinations
A comprehensive assessment provides you with a thorough review and personalized recommendations to keep you safe and healthy on your trip. We will provide you a personalized written report for the countries you are visiting that goes into great depth and detail.
Comprehensive assessment fee: $50 for 1-6 travellers going to the same destination present at the same appointment. The price does not change depending on how many people are present at the appointment. There is a $20 injection fee per person receiving vaccinations after the assessment
2) Basic appointment
A basic appointment is ideal for travellers who are quite confident in their own travel health plan and would like to review and verify it with someone knowledgeable in this area. Patients will have 10 minutes to have our travel health practitioner answer your questions, and review and evaluate your plan. Any vaccinations and medications are typically provided after the basic appointment.
You should consider booking a basic appointment if you:
- Are quite sure you know which vaccines and/or medications they need but need verification
- Are going on a shorter duration trips with an uncomplicated itinerary
- Do not have any complex medical conditions and are healthy
At a basic appointment, we will provide you with an overview of the main health risks for your itinerary. We will answer questions you have about possible vaccinations for your destination including a review traveller’s diarrhea risk including prevention and treatment. We do not provide detailed country-specific written information at this type of appointment.
A basic appointment is probably not a good option for those travelling for a month or more, have complex itineraries, are participating in higher risk activities, or have a complex medical history.
Basic appointment fee: $30 administrative/injection fee per person receiving vaccinations. If no vaccinations are to be administered there is a minimum administrative fee of $15/person. If booster doses are required in the future, the injection fee will be $20 per person.

We mostly see our patients by scheduled appointments. Usually we can schedule you in the same week, and we can often get you in the same day or the next day if necessary. Walk-ins are accepted but you may have to wait until a scheduled appointment is completed.

We can fill your travel health related prescription at Polaris Travel Clinic and Pharmacy, whether you had a consultation appointment with us or if you want to bring us a prescription written by another prescriber. Our dispensary keeps ample stock of the following medications:
Antimalarial drugs such as Malarone, chloroquine, mefloquine, and doxycycline
Antibiotics for traveller’s diarrhea such as ciprofloxacin (Cipro), azithromycin (Zithromax), and cefixime (Suprax)
Medications to prevent and/or treat altitude sickness such as acetazolamide (Diamox)
We also stock items such as EpiPens and meclizine for nausea.

Please note: if you bring in a prescription from another prescriber, you won’t be charged any additional consultation fees and we will attempt to directly bill your drug plan. You can book an prescription fill appointment time to ensure you don’t have to wait. If you walk in with a prescription, you may have to wait until the pharmacist is done a scheduled appointment before they process your prescription.
Non travel vaccines: If you are not going on a trip and need a vaccine such as tetanus, shingles, HPV, or Hepatitis B, we can provide a non-travel vaccine assessment and then prescribe and administer the vaccine. Non-travel vaccine appointment: injection fee of $20 per person per visit
Annual Medication Review and Assessment A 30 to 60 minute review and assessment by one of our pharmacists of each of your prescription and non-prescription medications, as well as any herbal remedies and supplements is NO CHARGE with Alberta health care and meeting eligibility requirements listed here.
